Graduated from the directing department of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. Tang Wei is an aspiring writer and director in addition to being an actress.
Her Western name is Rebecca.
Was selected from more than 10,000 actresses to star as Wang Jiazhi in Lust, Caution (2007), directed by Ang Lee.
Was honored as Asian Female Star of the Year by CineAsia 2007 (December 2007).
Was chosen by Variety as one of the Top 10 Actors to Watch (October 2007).
In 2008 Wei alone was blacklisted by the Chinese government for her participation in the controversial Lust, Caution (2007)(Lust, Caution). This included the pulling of her endorsement ads for Ponds skincare products in China, a deal reported to be worth nearly a million dollars (US). Members of the China's State Administration of Radio, Film & TV (SARFT) were reportedly censured for allowing the film's release.
She is an only child.
